Elsies River, South Africa — Genesis CITI’s I-CAN Centre is thrilled to announce its 9th anniversary, commemorating nearly a decade of impactful work in bridging the digital divide in South Africa. Since its inception in September 2015, the organization has created more than 20,000 training opportunities, primarily targeting youth in the Cape Flats region.
This initiative has aimed to foster a knowledge society and develop a skilled workforce for the burgeoning digital economy, addressing significant inequalities in education and skills training.
As a leading non-profit digital skills training institution, Genesis CITI is globally certified and accredited, focusing on IT and Business skills training as vital enablers of job growth. The I-CAN Centre goes beyond traditional skills training; it offers free Wi-Fi and open creative spaces where young individuals can cultivate social innovation initiatives through design thinking programs, particularly supporting aspiring entrepreneurs.
The Cape Flats region, especially Elsies River, has faced challenges such as substance abuse and unemployment among youth. Recognizing the pressing skills crisis that exacerbates these issues, Genesis CITI has been at the forefront of equipping marginalized communities with the necessary tools to thrive in the digital economy.
In 2022, Genesis CITI successfully applied for a Call for Proposals from the Department of Telecommunications, GIZ, and the International Labour Organization, focusing on a joint program aimed at providing digital skills for decent jobs for youth not in employment, education, or training. On November 22, 2022, the organization was awarded a jury prize for its proposal, which resulted in fully funded training in 2023 that empowered youth with mobile phone repair skills and entrepreneurship training.
